Thirty-plus Years in Journalism and PR: from Music to Public Affairs

1) Interviewed Bonnie Raitt and other musicians as a student reporter in 1973eagle23 for the American University student newspaper, The Eagle, in Washington, D.C.

Our limited budget and two-person staff allowed me to learn every aspect of the editorial process, including: developing story ideas and content; practicing my newly minted reporting and editing skills; polishing copyediting and proofreading skills; creating magazine layouts; taking photographs; managing the production process; directing photo shoots; and hiring freelancers.
3) Was hired in New York City as managing editor of a monthly for the advertising industry, “Madison Avenue”, in 1978.

5) Developed and wrote a series of monthly food columns over several years for “North Shore” Magazine, beginning in 1986. Covered the food business, nutrition, trends in cuisine, Chicago restaurants, culinary gifts, cookbooks, cooking schools and more.
6) Wrote a children’s book, “I Can Be an Interior Designer.”

8) While working in public relations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, staffed several high-profile events, including: Princess Diana’s visit to Northwestern Memorial in 1996; debut of the new $580 million Northwestern Memorial in 1999; and the visit of then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1999.
9) Participated and served as a media spokesperson in Chicago for the Million Mom March against gun violence in 2000. Was featured in “Newsweek”, the “Chicago Tribune”, the “Chicago Sun-Times”, the Pioneer Press chain of weekly newspapers and Chicago’s WBBM Channel 2 News. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin interviewed me for his cable TV program.
10) Daley_Anixter-1Was a key contributor − as director of public relations for Anixter Center − to a high-profile special event featuring Mayor Richard M. Daley as he participated in the March 2006 groundbreaking for an innovative residence for people with spina bifida and similar disabilities.
